A lot of these were made for the game Drawception, which is basically an unofficial "Telestrations" online. If you aren't familiar with either, it's the classic game of Telephone combined with Pictionary, in which player 1 is given a phrase and must draw it in 10 minutes; player 2 sees only the drawing and must explain (guess) what it is in the form of a word or phrase, player 3 draws player 2's explanation/guess, and so forth.

So I added detail, and ofc the light was changing, and he was moving, and he didn't perhaps know he was being drawn.
This was a hard fought battle for arguably not much. I really went through some dark nights of the soul trying to make this image into something. Why did it still come out so mediocre? Seems like it's taken a really long time but I'm still not convinced it's done.
But then again, sometimes you just need to leave things alone for a bit. Maybe someday, I'll see a direction to better this.
Honestly, I think my greatest frustration is that it's 2D CG and there was no ability to properly texture or layer in a corporeal way. I wanted to have some grit on this page, and it's just a shiny flat screen. Procreate's a great tool, but I want my hands dirty if I'm trying to make someone feel.
...hang on, that came out wrong.
Alright, Bill Cipher first appeared in Gravity falls on July 12, 2013, to my profound annoyance, because I'd never heard of Bill Cipher or Gravity falls until 2018, and I made this in 2014. Maybe he seeped into my unconscious through some subliminal exposure, but as far as I know, this dude emerged in my mind's eye all by himself when I was trying to design a new logo for our media company.
Anyway, we ended up not using him, because people thought he was disturbing. Nobody else mentioned Gravity Falls, either. That didn't happen for years.
Okay, so not THAT worried. Oh god, let's bring back some of that apex predator alpha male protein-swigging essence, cos you can't do a homie dirty giving him a torture hobbit tragi-face.
You know what's funny, I drew him sharp cos that's his psyche, but not actually his features - his features are quite round & smooth.
WOW. Then I REALLY overcorrected and went full Joffrey.
This is a DISASTER. WTF AM I GOING TO DO?! I could undo, but let's tai chi this Bob Ross style! No going back! Only forward! The only way out is through! The darkest light is before the dawn! I can salvage this drawing!
Really a worst case scenario portrait of all involved, but it made me laugh. Wasn't going for early Groenig or Mike Judd, but here we are.
We had a pretty cool patrician going here, but then I thought, "It just doesn't really look like him."
LOOK. It's nothing a horizontal flip can't solve, ok??
whew. thank god he looks a little rugged again. Hey, this is shaping up to resemble him, actually...
But now I'm wondering what I was thinking with this color scheme & background. I totally just leapt headlong into the whole thing without planning. Is this even a good image or composition? I'm just lying here gazing at homie having a lil drink on the porch & didn't for one moment stop to think about framing or anything. As usual, classic Monk style, zoomed in on a handful of planes & features and built outward from that without much consideration of the macrocosm of image composition.
